We understand the value of support during your consult and encourage you to bring your partner, friend or family member to the appointment. We offer a range of appointment options guided by your preference. Please discuss this with our lovely Admin officer at the time of booking.
Your options include:
- In-person consultation (Thursdays only)
- Video consultation
NOTE: At the time of booking, a non-refundable $100 will be charged in advance as part of your appointment fee. (Please refer to the cancellation policy below).
Diagnostic CONSULTATION ($250): 45 mins - 1 hour
This will include discussion regarding your family's medical history, options and consent for appropriate genetic testing, sharing of information, possible outcomes and implications of these for you and your family. In addition, any questions or concerns you may have will be addressed.
If you choose to proceed with testing and are:
- Eligible for public funded genetic testing (if there is >10% chance of identifying a gene fault in an individual diagnosed with an invasive cancer, as per MBS guidelines) - there will be No Cost for testing. You would only pay the consultation fees.
OR
- Ineligible for public funded genetic testing: You will have the option to self-fund the genetic testing with cost range starting from $449 - $600.
If you choose not to have testing, we can still provide information about cancer risks and appropriate surveillance recommendations for you and your family.
Predictive Consultation ($250): 45 MINS - 1 HOUR
This option is relevant for you if a pathogenic variant increasing the risk of developing cancer is already identified in your family. To make an appointment, you or your referring specialist will need to provide a copy of your relative's genetic testing report.
Consultation will include discussion regarding your family's medical history, the possible outcome of predictive testing, and their implications for you and your family. We will also discuss surveillance and management options in addition to any questions or concerns you may have.
If you consent to proceed with testing and are:
- Eligible for public funded genetic testing (as per the MBS guidelines) - there will be No Cost for testing. You would only pay the consultation fees.
OR
- Ineligible for public funded genetic testing: You will have the option to self-fund the single gene testing.
If you choose not to have testing, we can still provide information about cancer risks and discuss appropriate surveillance and management options for you and your family.
Result Consultation ($200)- 30 minutes
The result for genetic testing is available usually within 5 weeks' time. A follow up appointment will be made to discuss your result, including medical and emotional implications, surveillance and testing options for you and your family.
Cancellation policy
Due to the limited availability of the appointments and to ensure that all patients can be cared for in a timely manner, please be advised that we have a 48 hours cancellation policy for all appointments that require rescheduling or cancellation.
The following charges will apply:
● If you cancel or reschedule your appointment 48 hours prior– no charges.
● Less than 48 hours’ notice - a $100 fee will apply.
● If you fail to attend your appointment, a full consultation fee $250 may apply.
By making an appointment, you acknowledge and consent to abide by the above policy.
Please Note: There are currently no Medicare or private health insurance rebates for a genetic counselling appointment.
